Even Sir Lawrence seemed baffled by what was going on, gaping dumbly at the liquid. Then his hands sought the barrel rim and he began to whimper at the members of the jury.

“You’ve made your bloody point,” he managed. “I’m guilty. I’ll give more money to the people of Arcane Bay. A billion. Two. Don’t do this. Please don’t do this.”

General Anarchy came to the edge of the circle, followed by Judge Truth, who called out, “Sir Lawrence Treadwell, you have been found guilty and sentenced to death in an appropriate manner. So be it. Good people of the Third Position, see justice served.”

The jury members all fished something from the pockets of their coats. Hennessy could not see what they’d retrieved at first.

But Sir Lawrence evidently could and he went stark-raving mad.

“No!” he screamed. “You can’t! This is barbaric! Someone help! Stop them! Someone stop them!”

The screen jumped to a close-up shot of one of the jurors’ gloved hands holding a match. Off-camera, Sir Lawrence screeched, “No! For the bloody love of . . . Help!”

“It’s gas,” Seitz gasped.
